The Café as Third Place: Why Coffee Shops Surpass Libraries in Sound, Sociability, and Design

Yuechen An, The High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University’27

· paper

Abstract

The concept of the “third place”—a social environment separate from home and work—

has become increasingly important in modern urban life. Libraries have long been regarded as

typical public third spaces, yet they often prioritize quiet study over comfort and interaction. In

contrast, cafes have gradually emerged as more popular and functional third places for

contemporary people. Cafes are among the most representative and accessible third places that

provide affordable, inclusive, and supportive environments for people of all backgrounds (Finlay

et al., 2019, p. 2). This paper argues that cafes are superior to libraries as third spaces due to

three key advantages. First, the soothing background music in cafes creates a relaxed atmosphere

that reduces mental pressure. Second, cafes encourage casual social interaction, fostering

connection among individuals. Third, cafes pay greater attention to interior design and artistic

ambiance, enhancing the overall spatial experience. By analyzing these environmental and social

features, this study aims to demonstrate why cafes better satisfy modern demands for comfort,

communication, and aesthetic experience in public life.
