Genetics in the Studies of Susceptibility and Severity

of COVID-19

Jiarui Li, The Affiliated High School of South China Normal University International Department

· paper

Abstract:

This paper reviews studies on the associations between human genetics and COVID-19 susceptibility and severity. Several blood groups and genetic loci have been found to correlate with COVID-19 outcomes. Blood group A is associated with higher risk of infection and respiratory failure while blood group O has a protective effect. The 3p21.31 locus is linked to respiratory failure in COVID-19 patients. Two loci on chromosomes 11 are also connected to disease severity. While initial studies show promise, limitations exist due to sample size and methods. Further research is needed to confirm genetics' importance in COVID-19 infection and severity, which can inform treatment approaches and save lives.

Keywords: COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, genetics, blood groups, chromosomes, loci, susceptibility, severity, respiratory failure
