Abstract
This essay examines the extent to which modern economies are increasingly shaped by digital networks and platform-based systems rather than by traditional market mechanisms. It compares one-sided markets with two-sided platforms and analyzes how network effects influence search costs, market access, competition, and platform power. Findings suggest that digital networks substantially reshape how buyers, sellers, and platforms interact, although price, quality, demand, substitution, and competition continue to constrain digital markets. This essay also evaluates how artificial intelligence changes the economic importance of human connection. AI can automate routine and standardize interactions, reducing the value of some forms of interpersonal contact. However, in areas requiring trust, accountability, empathy, creativity, and strategic judgement, human relationships remain difficult to replace and may become relatively more valuable. Therefore, in the AI era, human connections become more economically important.
